I've now cut up 4 metal coat hangers, giving me a total of almost exactly 100 pieces of metal. Just as a quick test to see how well they are likely to work, I did a little experiment.
Note: You will likely think that the following is unbelievably silly and ridiculous and stupid, which it kind of is, but please bear in mind that this was simply a quick test to see how much grip they create.
Well, I got 5 of the pieces of metal and bent them into hooks using two pliers (which was very difficult because the pliers are so big but the pieces of metal are so small). Then... I sellotaped them to the fingers on my left hand and tried them out on the wall outside. I'll tell you the good news first. They do actually create quite a lot of grip; so much so that my confidence in this project has shot up, and I now genuinely believe that it will most probably work.
Now the bad news. Well, for one thing, the sellotape cut off the blood going to my finger tips, but that's irrelevant since I won't be using sellotape for the final thing, nor attaching them directly to my fingers. So here's the actual bad news. When I press them against the wall the metal doesn't 'bend' as such, but the whole hook twists, since it's not very firmly attached to anything.
But I can fix that. While I was coming up with solutions to this yesterday, I realised that one big reason for this was because I only had one on each finger. And since the hooks are cylindrical, they're free to swivel around. However, if I have a row of them on each finger (perhaps as little as two hooks next to each other, but I'll go for three just to be safe), then they shouldn't be able to twist.
So, I'll try that same test again later today, but with a small row of hooks on each finger this time.
