So, I've explained how I'm going to make the web shooters fire the string, but how am I going to make it actually stick to something? Well unfortunately, despite a lot of thinking, I can't come up with a possible way of making it capable of holding me up. However, I have managed come up with a way to make the device able to pick up fairly small objects (hopefully). I am positive it might work.
I know this is probably the last thing you want to here from someone trying to make a real web shooter, but... it uses sellotape. Yes, I know, but just bear with me for a moment, ok? Good.
Well, anyway, imagine a small metal rod about 3 inches long. That's what the device will be firing. And no, it's not going to have a tiny patch of sellotape on the end. It's more complicated than that. The metal rod will be in quarters, attached at the base, and be able to open out into an X shape, if you get what I mean. And on the inward facing side of each part, there will be a strip of double sided tape along them. Hopefully, this will be strong enough to be able to hold small objects, such as a plastic cup (I wouldn't want to fire a piece of metal at high speed at a glass cup, but maybe that's just me).
I've come up with two ways for the metal rod to open. One of them is simply that it's constantly trying to open (through means of elastic inside it or something), so when it exits the device, it can open up. However, this might cause it to get jammed inside the device. The other way I came up with was to have a "pocket" on the outward facing side of each quarter, which will create drag as the rod is flying through the air. This drag should hopefully be enough to pull the four parts open. I'm still not sure which one I'll use. Unfortunately, I'm not Tesla, so I can't just visualise the device and be able to work out precisely what's going to happen. I need to actually test it, like a normal person.
So I'll do that.
And then I'll get back to you.
