I love this new design! It's so much quicker and easier to make. I was able to make the entirety of the other 'glove' the morning after my last blog post, and I managed to try them out. Obviously, they didn't work, otherwise I would have updated the blog a lot sooner than I have. But, what I can tell you is that they are much better than the other ones. These ones didn't exactly 'fail' to hold my weight... it's just... I can't stop myself from bailing as soon as my weight starts coming down on them, because I can feel them failing. After every attempt, I could see that the paper clips had been seriously bent out of place, the hooks having pulled them up. But the significant point is, the hooks are indeed getting a very good hold on the wall. In fact, even when I fall when I attempt to cling to the wall, my hands don't actually move. The 'gloves' do seem to stay where they are. It's just, as I said, I can't stop myself from bailing. But I know that if I didn't, they would get much more badly mangled. So what I really need is a way of keeping the hooks more firmly attached to the boards, and then they might be able to hold my weight.
So I have come up with a design to do just that! I'm currently in the process of adding two more hooks to each row, except these hooks will be folded over the other way, so they are upside down, with the points embedded in the board itself. Yet because they are attached to the same thing as the other hooks on that row are attached to (i.e. the paper clip), the other hooks should, in theory, be pretty much locked in place. So far I've finished two of the rows, meaning I have four more to go. It doesn't take too long to do - it's just a matter of having the time.
In other news, I watched The Amazing Spider-Man 2 yesterday. It is such a good film! It's definitely one of my favourite films, along with the first one. And now I'm super motivated to become as much like Spider-Man as possible. I was thinking about the web shooters, and how, even though I'm pretty sure I've got the actual 'shooter' design more or less sorted, I'm still at a loss as to how to make the web actually stick to things. Until now, that is.
As you know, my previous idea of having sticky blocks along a length of string didn't seem to work, going by my preliminary tests. However, I've now come up with a better idea, this one inspired by my desire to become more like an authentic Spider-Man. It's a bit complicated, but it's more similar to my original 'rod' idea. Except instead of a single rod, this will be made of, say, six different threads with a rod on the end of each one. So rather than the inside of the rod being sticky, the six of them will be able to wrap around something and kind of get tangled amongst each other, like multi-headed grappling hook. And you know what, why don't I just use strong, thin wire, so that it can hold my weight and I really can swing from structures?
